Roy Kearley of Wortley Football Club will be working with the children in Year 1 this term. He is looking for volunteers who would be interested in helping to the new football team of boys and girls under the age of 7. The club will cover the cost (through the funding provided) to send parents and volunteers on recognised Football Association Coaching Courses, First Aid and Child Protection Workshops so they have the required certification in place to manage the new team. The club will also support the new teams in terms of coaching and refereeing provision for the first year. Through membership and subscriptions the team will become self funding after Year 1.

If you are interested in the role you can contact Roy on the details below.

Dear Parent/Guardian

Sometime ago I wrote to you to say that when Mr Hughes returned after half term he would be teaching Year 6 and Mrs Duffy  Year 5.

However, due to our transition arrangements with Mount St Mary's High being different this year it is preferable for Mrs Duffy to remain in Year 6 until the end of the year and Mr Hughes in Year 5.

Dear Parent/Guardian

I hope that you will all enjoy the half term break. I would like to take this opportunity, now that new staff have been appointed to give you the list of teachers for next year and their assigned classes.

Head Teacher Appointment

The Governors appointed Mr Strong as Headteacher of Holy Family.  He is currently Deputy Headteacher at St. Augustine ’s Catholic Primary.

3rd March 2009  Re contact with other children/parents in the playground.

I am writing to remind you that it is not permitted to accost another child or parent/guardian in the playground regarding any problem you may have.  If you have any problem relating to the behaviour of any child  or parent/guardian please contact school to arrange an appointment with the class teacher / Head or Deputy.

Failure to do so may result in the Legal Services of Education Leeds taking out an injunction order against you.

Door to Key Stage 2 playground.

A number of parents have started to come into school in the evening via this door.  This is leading to congestion in the corridor.  If you have something to discuss with a teacher please ring up and make an appointment.

Yours sincerely

P. O'Connor

9th February 2009.

Thank you to all those who recently returned questionnaires.  84% of children replied most favourably to every question.  16% gave some negative replies.  From the parental questionnaires 66% replied in the most favourable category and 34% replied usually / sometimes.

Comments included:

1. Lack of understanding of the house system.  Mr. Hughes is sending a letter out to explain this further.

2. More examples needed for Numeracy.  Mrs. Hartley had already sent out a booklet containing several examples but this booklet will be put on the website soon.  If you prefer an additional hard copy please let school know.

3. Perception of children with behavioural difficulties being rewarded more than others.  We shall be revising our policy after half-term and will get back to you on this matter.

4. Participation in Sports Day.  We are looking into greater parental participation this year.

Enterprise Initiative

Holy Family have been taking part in an Enterprise initiative. Each class was allocated a sum of money and the children had to decide on creative and innovative ways of spending the money to make a profit. We certainly have some budding entrepreneurs at Holy Family! The children certainly enjoyed coming up with ideas, being creative and making money! However that's not the only thing the children have learnt through this initiative, the children also learnt the lesson of spending and saving their money appropriately.

Year 1 charged people to enter a Mario Kart league on the smart board after school. They made chocolate crispy buns and decorated gingerbread men to sell on the night and make a profit.

Year 2 raffled a beautiful gingerbread house and organised a coffee morning all parents were invited to attend.

Year 3 came up with the idea of a games cafe for the children to use at play time. The children could pay to enter competitions and play games. Toast and drinks were on sale as well. Year 3 also raffled a cool remote control dinosaur.

Year 4 thought about doing a talent show after school where drinks and snacks would be on sale. Year 4 organised a playtime wii games event.

Year 5 sold tickets to a cinema night after school. Drinks and snacks were on sale that night, including a chocolate fountain! The children also made lots of bookmarks and other things to sell around school. Some children took the idea further and made things at home to sell at school.

Year 6 did a football tournament at a lunchtime and sold tickets to a youth club after school. The children made a variety of cards, sweets, biscuits and other things to sell at their valentines stall.

Collection of Year 2 Children at the end of the School day

As from Monday 12th January we are experimenting with Year 2 children being picked up at the entrance to the Year 2 classroom from the playground.  In the morning the children will line up as usual with Reception and Year 1 in the playground outside the office. Key Stage 2 children will still be collected from the door at the  end of the corridor leading to the playground.

Lunchtime Behaviour

We have adopted a new procedure for lunchtime behaviour.  If a child repeatedly behaves in a manner which is unaceptable they will be referred to Mrs Papadakis the lunchtime supervisor.  If following a warning, this type of behaviour is repeated a referral will be made to the class teacher.  If the unacceptable behaviour is then repeated a referral will be made to Mrs O'Connor and the parents will be requested to make an appointment to discuss the matter.

Mrs O'Connor

Mrs O'Connor will resign from her post at Holy Family Primary as of 31st August 2009. She will be working part time in the School improvement Section of North Lincolnshire County Council.

Extension

Our Foundation Stage children will be able to enjoy the new canopy which has been built in their outdoor area. The canopy will be used to keep equipment for outdoor provision. There are still some final bits to finish off but as soon as it's up and running we will be posting photographs.

Joseph show

Well done to all of KS2 and the Drama Club for putting on a brilliant performance of Joseph and the Technicoloured Dreamcoat. Everybody acted and sang beautifully. You all looked amazing in your costumes! Well sone to all the soloists and those who had a speaking part in the play.

African Arts Week

African Arts week was a big success at Holy Family. All the classes enjoyed a variety of activities in school learning about Africa. Each class also had some time with our visitor Mandola, who worked with the children to learn African dances, sing songs and make music, create wire animals, make African puppets and design artistic masterpieces.

House Points

Holy Family has recently implemented a new reward system. The new system has been devised by both the children and the staff in an atempt to increase good behaviour in school.

The system comprises of four House teams. The children from Reception through to Year 6 have been grouped randomly into these four teams:

St Patrick (Green),

St David (Yellow),

St George (Red) and

St Andrew (Blue).

When a child recieves a sticker for good behaviour around school, they can place this on the reward chart (please see below). At the end of the week the House Team with the most points is rewarded with a team trophy. After a full half term the team that has accumulated the most points will recieve a special reward.

Already the top rewards have included: a picnic, going ice skating, a limo ride,  and a party in school.

Christmas Plays

All the children performed well in the Christmas plays. Sorry it's taken so long to get the photos on the website!
